Meditation and Transformation: Devotional Arts of Tibet

In collaboration with the UIUC/Ford Foundation program "Arts of the Sacred," Tibetan monk-artists Tenzin Shakya and Geshe Lobsang Kunga, of the Drepung Gomang Monastery in Mundgod, India, created an intricate mandala sand painting in the museum in Spring 2002. The artwork as well as the process of creating / performance was on view during this time. The local university and community were invited to watch and chant with the monks.

The monk-artists were in the gallery March 26, 2002 through April 6, 2002 during the following hours:

Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays
10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Wednesdays
10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.
Sunday
2:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.

The monks finished the mandala on Saturday, April 6, 2002 and performed a closing ceremony in the Contemporary Gallery which began at 12:30.
