Meditation and Transformation: Devotional Arts of Tibet

Launch Website: www.kam.uiuc.edu/explore/mandala

In collaboration with the UIUC/Ford Foundation program "Arts of the Sacred," Tibetan monk-artists Tenzin Shakya and Geshe Lobsang Kunga, of the Drepung Gomang Monastery in Mundgod, India, created an intricate mandala sand painting in the Museum from March 26 through April 6, in the contemporary gallery. The artwork and process of creating / performance was on view during this time.

The mandala was on view in the museum for a year and a half after it was created, and then was destroyed in a proper ceremony and the sand was spilled into the Boneyard Creek in the Engineering Campus.
