Ex-votos

Authenticity.
The most “authentic” ex-voto painting is one that is used for the votive purpose explained on the painting itself. However, with the increasing popularity of the votive painting form, folk artists in the late 20th century began painting pictures in the style of the traditional ex-voto to sell to collectors. Two examples are those by an unknown artist in the 1990s and by Alfredo Vilchis, a well-known artist from Mexico City. These artists do not claim that their works are old. However, occasionally artists or shopkeepers will sell copies as old works, as in the two examples copied from a scholarly text.

Autenticidad.
La pintura de ex-voto más “auténtica” es la que es usada con intenciones votivas explicadas en la pintura misma. No obstante, con la creciente demanda de pinturas votivas al final del siglo XX, los artistas populares empezaron a pintar en el estilo tradicional del ex-voto para vender a coleccionistas. Aquí vemos dos muestras, una hecha por un artista no conocido en la década de 1990 y otra por Alfredo Vilchis, un reconocido artista de ciudad de México. Estos artistas no afirman que sus trabajos fueran antiguos. De cualquier forma, algunos artistas o galerías venden copias como trabajos antiguos, como las dos pinturas aquí, copiadas de un libro de arte.

In this town during the month of June, 1944, Señor Domingo Mena was gravely ill with tuberculosis of the lung, causing him to vomit material. Not finding any human remedy, his wife Guadalupe and his sister-in-law Maria ran to the protection of Our Lord of the Column, seeking from Him that he might deign to restore his health and that the attacks might not return. The Lord heard their petition, and from his sickness he was cured. They dedicate the present [retablo] in proof of His miracle.

En esta villa en el mes de Junio de 44, Viendoce el Sr. Domingo Mena gravemente enfermo de un tuberculosis en el pulmon, Causandole vomitos de material y no encontrando remedio humanamente, su esposa Guadalupe y su cuñada Maria ocurrieron a la protección del Señor de la columna, pidiendole se dignara restaurarle la salud y que no volvieran los hecsesos [accessos ?]. El Señor escuchó su petición, y de la enfermedad quedó sano y dedican el presente en prueba de su milagro.

I give thanks to the Virgin of San Juan de los Lagos because she made a miracle for me in that my harvest was good and, for that reason, I was able two buy my little burros and to carry my merchandise to sell in the market. Le doy gracias a la Virgen de San Juan de los Lagos porque me hizo el milagro de que mi cosecha fuera buena y por eso pude comprar mis burritos para llebar mi mercancia a vender al mercado y en agradecimiento le dedico el presente. Juvencio Mendez P. Chinconcuac Edo. de Mexico. 1937.

Maria Antonieta Perez broke her back when she climbed onto the high shelves of the cupboard and they came down on her and crushed her. She and her parents, Doña Luz and Don Ramón give thanks to the most holy Virgin of Zapopan because the girl is recuperating in a wonderful manner and the doctor said that she’s going to be just fine. Mexico, D.F. 1959.

María Antonieta Perez se rompió la espalda cuando por subirse a los estantos altos del trastero, se les vino encima y la aplastó. Ella y sus papás, Doña Luz y Don Ramón dan gracias a la santisima Virgen de Zapopan, porque la niña se recupera de manera asombrosa, y dijo el doctor que va a quedar muy bien. México, D.F. 1959.
